Connection and meaningfulness

Authentic Leadership

Our team is built on a belief in authentic leadership: that when one’s individual values, principles, and heart are aligned with our organizational pillars, we experience a greater sense of connectedness to each other, and meaningfulness in the work.

Our Six Staff Pillars

Coney Island Prep’s team is guided by six pillars that are the foundation of our work.

Ownership

Ownership means that we believe it is up to us to create the opportunities, school, and organization we want for our kids, families, and our team.

Urgency

Urgency is strategic. We work with the sense of urgency that comes when you know your margin for error is small, but the outcome will be game- changing. At the same time, it does not mean we rush to solve problems without thoughtfully planning, or thinking through consequences.

Data

Data is a tool to guide leaders, not an instrument to punish scholars. We hold ourselves to an incredibly high standard. We are constantly evaluating to judge our relative distance or closeness to making our mission real for each individual scholar.

Commitment

Commitment requires mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual self-care. Commitment does not mean working to the point of burnout. Our investment in ensuring every single one of our scholars is prepared to succeed is unmatched.

Humility

Humility means that we know we are not always right. We acknowledge and own our mistakes. We actively seek out feedback, reflect, and grow. It also means that diversity is a source of our strength. We believe a diverse, inclusive team that operates with equity helps us learn, grow, and serve.

Levity

We love what we do. Our team is built on a belief in authentic leadership: that when one’s individual values, principles, and heart are aligned with our organizational pillars, we experience a greater sense of connectedness to each other, and meaningfulness in the work.

Meet Jaylynn Walker, CIP Alumna and now 4th Grade Teacher

Our Apprentice Teacher position supports recent college graduates who are interested in a career in education, but do not have prior teaching experience or New York state certification. Offers to become a Coney Island Prep Apprentice Teacher are contingent upon acceptance into the Relay Graduate School of Education Teaching Residency, a two-year Masters program that allows you to gain valuable experience by taking on responsibilities both inside and outside of the classroom while receiving exceptional professional development throughout the year. Upon successfully completing the program, residents receive a Masters in the Art of Teaching degree and New York state certification.

Apprentice Teachers are full-time, salaried employees who receive full benefits, plus tuition assistance to attend Relay Graduate School of Education.
